Diseases to Protect Against When Traveling Internationally

Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite. The parasite is spread to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. People who have malaria usually feel very sick with a high fever and shaking chills. While the disease is uncommon in temperate climates, malaria is still common in tropical and subtropical countries.

Typhoid fever is a life-threatening infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. It is usually spread through contaminated food or water. Once Salmonella Typhi bacteria are ingested, they multiply and spread into the bloodstream.

Meningitis is an infection and swelling, called inflammation, of the fluid and membranes around the brain and spinal cord. These membranes are called meninges. The inflammation from meningitis most often triggers symptoms such as headache, fever and a stiff neck.

Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. Shingles can occur anywhere on your body. It typically looks like a single stripe of blisters that wraps around the left side or the right side of your torso. Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox.

Cholera is a disease that is caused by bacteria. Most often, it spreads through water that’s been tainted with bacteria. It also can spread through tainted food. Cholera can cause serious diarrhea and dehydration. Without treatment, the disease can be fatal within hours, even in people who were healthy.

Travelers’ diarrhea is the most common travel-related illness; it’s a brief but unpleasant gastrointestinal infection that affects travelers and others who consume contaminated food or water. It can occur anywhere, but the highest-risk destinations are in Asia (except for Japan and South Korea) as well as the Middle East, Africa, Mexico, and Central and South America.

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a viral infection spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes, commonly found in rural and agricultural areas of Asia and parts of the Western Pacific. It affects the brain and can lead to serious complications, including inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), seizures, coma, or even death in severe cases.

The MMR vaccine is a combination of three vaccines in one shot. It helps protect you from measles, mumps, and rubella, three potentially serious viral illnesses. Healthcare providers recommend two doses. Kids usually get one dose between the ages of 12 and 15 months and another between the ages of 4 and 6.

Hepatitis A and B are both viral infections that cause liver inflammation, but they differ in how they are transmitted and their potential for chronicity. Hepatitis A is typically spread through contaminated food or water or close personal contact, and it usually resolves on its own within a few weeks. Hepatitis B, on the other hand, is primarily spread through blood and bodily fluids and can lead to chronic infection, potentially causing serious liver damage and increasing the risk of liver cancer.
